AVOCATIONS — A Magazine of Hobbies and Leisure, December 1938

THE WALTER P. CHRYSLER
COLLECTION OF OLD
MECHANICAL PENNY BANKS

by Norman Sherwood

Walter P. Chrysler Maker of Motor Cars,
With world-wide fame wherever "gas" is burned,
Said to himself one day "What else to do?
Since in my chosen field all honors I have earned."

A man who makes the upward climb,
To that place called "success" at "Journey’s end,"
Learns among many other lessons sound—
When needful of advice—"to ask a friend."

So Chrysler spoke unto his friend Sam Pryor,
Who is himself "some pumpkins" in his chosen field,
"Sam, what the heck should I collect—moneys no fun—
And fun is what MY hobby’s ‘gotta’ yield."

His choice was wise, because unknown to him,
For years Sam Pryor had collected BANKS,
The kind which do a trick or stunt—
When pennies are put in—to show their thanks.

When Walter looked at Samuel’s Banks,
He knew the answer he had found,
He let no "grass grow underneath his feet,"
Straightway he started looking all around.

He bought Banks here—he bought them there—
First a couple—then a score,
He started off with just a few—
But darn soon he had more and more.

You do not build a Motor Car,
So fine, its market is the "whole wide world,"
Unless you know most all "your P’s and Q’s"—
(Perhaps you may have heard!)

What Walter Chrysler put into his Motor Cars,
He also put into his Bank Collection,
And when he found he couldn’t get a Bank,
He didn’t sit him down in deep dejection.

He hunted far, he hunted wide—
He had me hunting—also you,
And the "big shots"—who run the Chrysler "outfit,"
He had them hunting too.

From hither and yon his Banks have come,
Rare Banks, fine Banks, funny Banks too,
If not restrained by modesty extreme—I’d mention,
That I myself have found him quite a few.

There in his Sanctum high above the street,
In the high Tower which bears his honored name,
This many sided man has "put together"
His BANK COLLECTION (it’s just part of the game.)

He says—"These Banks have come to mean to me
A sort of symbol of the ‘Game of Life!’
Each one works so darn hard to ‘get the money,’
Yet they can’t spend it—ain’t that sorta funny?"

I’d like to add my "two cents" at the end,
Our fun is mostly "getting it," not when we spend.
